RIA FORMOSA HUMAN ACTIVITIES

	Ria Formosa his a special area for recreation and leisure and hence the importance of al turistical activities. Over the past four decades Tourism has been the engine of economic growth and development in the Algarve, not only in the Ria Formosa but all along the Algarve coast. Beyond the tourist use the system also supports other economic activities like seafood farms.

The fishing activity still important , is only partly dependent on the lagoon system.

The interdependence does not derive primarily from catches but the important function that nursery meets the river for fish species and molluscs.

The cultivation of molluscs, whose main product is the clam, the extencive nurseries cover hundreds of hectares being visible at low tide all along the Ria Formosa. To this is added to the collection of molluscs in natural beds.

The salt, whose history is lost in the distant past, contributes a large share.
In addition to the economic relevance, the salt plants in the Ria Formosa play a key role as a rest area and / feeding of a large number of waders.

An increase in the number of fich farms installed in the old salflats , the most exploited specie are sea bass, sea bream and sea bream.

Agriculture is in decline at regional level, the dried fruits (almonds and figs), citrus and olive groves are the dominant crops in the Algarve interior .

The most important cities near the Ria Formosa are Tavira, Faro and Olhao. The Ria Formosa lagoon attracted human occupants from the Palaeolithic age until the end of pre-history. During that time a settlement grew up. With the advent of Moorish rule in the 8th century retained its status and importance in the southwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula.
