RIA FORMOSA CULTURAL HERITAGE

 

The cultural heritage existing is very interesting, be they joint or historic sites, buildings, isolated villages and rural fishery and other additional events, such as handicrafts, food, beliefs and traditions.

 

The archaeological remains of severa diferentl people who have settled in the area since the Palaeolithic and later the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs, express ancient cultural roots.

The Roman presence has deeply marked the territory. Examples of this are the ancient city of Balsa, located in Tavira (luz de Tavira)or the archaeological site of Marim, revealing a ancient villa settlement.

The Islamic occupation is revealed in the settlements, the typology of dwellings in toponymy, the vegetable gardens and citrus groves, the vestments and the many archaeological remains.

In the XVI fishing for tuna and sardines and salt trade activities were expanding in the Algarve, which favored the growth . These camps, which initially were only huts of reeds, had a remarkable development in the century.
